Welcome from our President

Welcome to Wolfson College, Oxford's most international and interdisciplinary graduate College with students from 75 nationalities, studying for Doctorates and Master's degrees in a wide range of subjects. Its Fellows are some of the world's leading intellectual authorities in an extraordinary diversity of fields, from ancient history to anthropology, world literature, oriental studies and medical sciences. Founded in 1966, Wolfson has one of the most attractive sites in the city. Tucked away in leafy North Oxford, yet within easy reach of the centre, the College has an elegant array of modern buildings with a brand new auditorium and café, full of contemporary art, overlooking beautiful gardens, the Cherwell River, the College's own harbour for punts, and the meadows beyond.

Wolfson is modern in every sense of the word. You won't find panelling, spires, chapels, high tables, hierarchies or ancient formalities here. You will find an egalitarian, democratic management structure in which graduate students and Wolfson's many Research Fellows are involved in the College's decisions, and students and Fellows eat and meet together in the Hall and Common Room. You will find a hospitable, tolerant and family-oriented environment with a day-nursery for Wolfson children and a welcome for students' partners. You'll find a vigorous and lively range of activities and clubs, in sports, art and music and other activities. The words I most often hear applied to Wolfson are 'friendly', 'unstuffy', and 'grown-up'.

I hope you will enjoy your time here. You will find everyone willing to answer your questions and help you settle in. You are very welcome to Wolfson College in the College’s 50th Anniversary Year.

Professor Dame Hermione Lee FBA, FRSL, CBE
President of Wolfson College, University of Oxford
