Wolfsonians recognised in New Year Honours

John Buchanan was a Research Fellow at Wolfson from 1968-70, and has been knighted for services to industry.

Sir John is the chairman of global medical technology company Smith & Nephew and is also heavily involved in a number of charitable organisations. He said it was an honour to receive the recognition, particularly in his adopted home country. "I feel quite privileged. I have been very lucky dealing with the business sector and the voluntary sector and I'm just very honoured to receive this."

Jess Wood has been appointed MBE for services to lesbian, gay, bisexual and trans young people, after setting up Allsorts Youth Project in 1999. Jess successfully oversaw the expansion of the service and has raised more than £1m in the last decade, which has seen the charity help more than 1,000 young people.

Jess studied social anthropology at Wolfson from 1978-1981, where she helped set up Lesbian Line and a rape crisis helpline. On receving the award, she said, "What pleases me most is that an MBE for any LGBT individual tells us that the state recognises that the LGBT communities matter and need specific services which the state values and honours".
