Making a difference

Legacies have funded vital scholarships, hardship bursaries, and buildings at Wolfson, making a crucial difference to the College.

Today’s students and researchers enjoy an environment in which they can thrive: art, music and gardens supported by Geoffrey Garton’s major legacy; financial support to work on issues across and between subjects funded by the suit of Marriott Scholarships, named in honour of a bequest from Dr Francis Marriott, an eminent statistician and late fellow of the College. Subject-specific support such as the Ullendorff Scholarship and bursaries such as the Merete Jacoksen Award also bear witness to the generosity of Wolfsonians in leaving legacies to the College.

How to leave a legacy to Wolfson

Our Legacy Brochure is available to download below. It includes information on the different types of bequest you can make, and a bequest response form that you can complete and send to us if you already plan to leave a legacy to Wolfson.

As an exempt charity, Wolfson pays no tax on gifts of money or property bequeathed in a legacy. This method of giving also has Inheritance Tax benefits for the legator. If you would like information about leaving a legacy to Wolfson and the related tax benefits involved in doing so, please get in touch with Huw David, Wolfson’s Development Director.

Recognising our legators

Everyone who has pledged a bequest to Wolfson in his or her will and has told us of this is invited to join the Syme Society. Members of the Syme Society are invited to an annual luncheon in College, giving us an opportunity to thank those who have remembered Wolfson in their will.  The society is named in honour of one of Wolfson’s most distinguished fellows and benefactors, Sir Ronald Syme. A prolific twentieth century academic, he was knighted and received the Order of Merit for his services to classics.
